This project was all about exploring space by pulling from various existing media, ranging from "Creep" by Radiohead to the painting "Rooms by the Sea" by Edward Hopper, to design spaces catered to artists.

The program drew its inspiration from the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida which functions as an arts education facility and a collaborative community for artists. The center hosts a diverse range of artists-in-residence spanning multiple artistic disciplines. Similarly, the program required appropriate spaces for a painter, sculptor, and dancer.

Painting Fragments
Using Edward Hopper paintings, I created spatial fragments to help guide me as a continued developing my models and programs. These fragments would become the basis of the physical models I would construct while exploring ideas of heiarchy, circulation, and movement.

"New York Movie," 1939

Process
After making a few quick sketch ideas and constructing it, I was able to further develop my spaces through two section drawings in an iterative process.

Painter's Studio
The painter’s space is small and intimate. Natural light floods in from the front, creating an ambient space for him to work on small, colorful paintings.

Sculptor's Studio
The sculptor's space is tall and narrow, echoing the towering, intricate sculptures they create. An elevated walkway provides access to the upper sections of the space, enabling the sculptor to work on the upper portions of their statues with ease.

Exhibition Space
Dancer's Studio
The space for the dancer is wide and overhanging, unlike the small, vertical spaces of the painter and sculptor. Reflective materials are used to accentuate the dancers' movements, creating a captivating performance area. An observatory area is situated around a portion of the perimeter, offering visitors and dancers a space to experience the dance.
